Wednesday's activities


Period 1

Social Studies

Objective:Students will gain knowledge about cultures and geography of Pakistan
Materials needed: LCD projector, laptops, markers, large poster paper.
Task:
Students will locate Pakistan on a map.
Students will visit the Culture Grams site for Pakistan.
Teacher and students will discuss information on the front/summary page for Pakistan.
Students will be divided into groups. Students will complete a scavenger hunt/research assignment for Pakistan, each group will be responsible for a different section.
Students will given a large piece of poster paper, each group will create a poster with information/drawings of the information they found. The posters will be displayed in the classroom.


Period 2

Language Arts

Objective:
Materials needed:
Task:
Students will spend some time reading blog posts about predictions.
Class discussion: Were there any comments/predictions from your classmates that you agree with?

Introduce Author of young readers edition: Sarah Thomson.
Sarahthomson.com

Discussion questions:
Why do you think Ms. Thomson chose to write the young readers edition?
Students will prepare a list of questions to ask Ms. Thomson to prepare for a Skype visit.

Vocabulary work:
The teacher will create a list of vocabulary words and share them with the students.
Students will be working with vocabulary from chapters 1-3.
Teacher will create a vocabulary list on Spelling City for students to practice using the words for homework/follow-up.


Period 3

Home Economics

Objective: Students will complete a cost projection for their product.
Materials needed: list of ingredients, calculator, laptop (to create budget)
Task:
Students will work in groups to determine the following for their product:
- ingredient items
- amount of ingredients needed and the total cost of ingredients
- who will be responsible for which part of the preparation.
- price (the goal is to make a profit)

Student will submit a plan with the above information to the teacher.


Period 4

Math

Objective: students will continue to work with plotting data.
Materials needed: laptops with spreadsheet, internet.
Task: Students will take data from literacy rates in Pakistan and apply them to populations of:
- City of South Portland
- Our School
- This class

Students will discuss the data they calculated. What does it look like for students in this school? In our class?
Was there anything about the results that surprised you?


Period 5

Art

Objective: Students will create their own collage
Materials needed: Collage materials brought in by students, teacher materials, glue, markers.
Task: Students will divide in to groups of two or three. Students will brainstorm a story to re-tell through collages. They may choose a famous story, or choose to tell one of their own.
Each story must be:
- at least five pages in length
- collage illustration on each page
- a beginning and ending
